Even “Safe” Water has Risks – Is tap Water Safe?

Tap Water is often used for a variety of daily needs, including drinking, washing, cooking, and more. The accessibility to this source of water has made it a go-to option for drinking water. However, did you know this water contains a blend of chemicals which could result in thousands of cancer cases? Well, let’s find out how.

According to a recent report gotten from a peer-reviewed study published in the journal Heliyon Thursday, it was found that 22 carcinogens usually found in tap water – including arsenic, byproducts of water disinfectants and radionuclides such as uranium and radium – could have a role in over 100,000 cancer cases throughout a lifetime.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that despite the compliance of most tap water with the legal standards, this source of water poses a considerable risk for cancer and overall wellbeing.

In a statement, the Vice President for Science Investigations at EWG, Olga Naidenko, said “The vast majority of community water systems meet legal standards, yet the latest research shows that contaminants present in the water at those concentrations – perfectly legal – can still harm human health.”

So, we can say Tap water is not as safe as you thought.

According to the study, there are 22 contaminants actively present in 48,363 community water systems and causing 22 carcinogenic risks in the United States. These numbers estimate to about 86% of the U.S. population.

Upon further assessment, EWG found that the contaminants in tap water are likely to affect around four in every 10,000 people over the span of the lifetime.

What’s the Way Forward?

EWG suggested the adoption of water filters to help reduce the contaminants on an individual level. However, according to the group, this could be an expensive move as the filter system can cost hundreds and thousands to buy and install.

On a broader point of view, experts advise the elimination of contaminants from the actual source of the tap water.

With technologies available to help ensure complete eradication of these contaminants from drinking water, “We need to prioritize source water protection to make sure that these contaminants don’t get into the drinking water supplies, to begin with,” Naidenko said in a statement.

However, for these changes to be implemented, it might cost the public more. “If people are aware of the health impacts (of tap water), they might be willing to pay more for water treatment,” said Sedlak. “But at this point, the EPA has made their decision.”
