Water and Your Health

Water is essential to sustain life. This is because almost 70% of the human body is made up of water.  For this reason, proper hydration by drinking Water is vital for good health.

Health experts suggest we drink eight glasses of water per day for proper hydration.

However, if we are to drinking all this water each day, the water we drink should be safe!

Options include a pitcher filter with activated carbon, under sink filter with activated carbon or a whole house filtration system using activated carbon and other filter media.

Do you take water for granted?

As important water is to our survival, most of us take water for granted.  We assume our city water is safe because it comes from the “government”.  And as long as our well water is crystal clear, we assume it’s ok to drink.  But is it?  What if your septic system is only fifty feet from your well?

What you can’t see may harm you!

Many of the most harmful impurities found in drinking water are invisible.  You can’t see them!  These include Lead, Mercury, heavy metals, THMs, VOCs, cysts, virus, bacteria and other harmful impurities.

However, if our outdoor air is polluted, you can see the smog.  And when we see this, we get alarmed!

In one example, you can see the pollution.  However, you should not assume your water is safe, simply because you can’t see the pollutants or impurities!  Because what you can’t see may harm you!

Who should be concerned?

Everyone should be concerned with their water quality:

  • Parents of young children
  • Children
  • Adults
  • Seniors
  • And we all should be concerned for our pets

In fact, bottled water sales now exceed sales for all bottled beverages, combined.  Obviously, this is because many of us suspect our tap water is not safe.

Bottled Water

Bottled water sales are skyrocketing! In fact, bottled water sales now exceed sales for all bottled beverages, combined.  Obviously, this is because many of us suspect our tap water is not safe.

Some bottled water suppliers use spring water, which is filtered.  No Chlorine is added for disinfection; however, in some cases the water is treated with ozone prior to being bottled.

Other water bottlers simply use municipal water, which is filtered to remove impurities and Chlorine before the water is bottled.

Bottled water is Chlorine FREE

water is Chlorine free.  Yet, all municipal water is chlorinated, and most Americans don’t give the idea of drinking water with Chlorine in it a second thought!

But times are changing!

More of us are asking our self, “Should I be drinking water with Chlorine in it?”

How to remove the Chlorine, VOCs and harmful chemicals

It’s easy!

Pitcher Filter

Under Sink Filter With Faucet

Whole house filter to enjoy filtered water from every faucet in your home.

Other health concerns

Other health concerns related to water quality include:

Trihalomethanes  (THMs)

THMs are harmful by-products, which are formed during the chlorination process.  THMs are more prevalent when surface water is used as a water source and when organics are present in the water.  Health experts have linked Trihalomethanes to cancer, and they are considered a carcinogen. The Federal Government has set a MCL level for Trihalomethanes at 10 parts per billion.  You may want to set your own limit for you and your family, and we suggest “zero” is a good number!

Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Copper, Cadmium, Silver and other heavy metals

Lead and other heavy metals typically appear in your water when water is corrosive, allowing metals in pipes and plumbing fixtures to leach into your water.  When pH is six and below, water is considered corrosive, and the pH of your water should be adjusted.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Health effects from VOCs include damage to the liver, kidneys and central nervous system; cancer in animals; and some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.  VOCs are both human made and natural occurring.  There are thousands of chemicals used every day in industry.  Only ninety (90) have established MCL regulations by the USEPA. Regardless, VOCs should be removed from your water!

These are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used around the globe since the 1940s.  Both chemicals appear in the environment, and once in the body, they accumulate and do not break down.

A study by Harvard University has determined PFASs and PFOAs exceed the USEPA Maximum Contaminant Level in 33 states, and millions of Americans are at risk.  These chemicals are linked to cancer and are a serious drinking water quality concern.  Exposure is common near manufacturing facilities, landfills, wastewater treatment plants and fire fighter training facilities.

Nitrate in drinking water is a most common problem in rural and suburban communities primarily because of fertilization.  Nitrate is regulated by the USEPA because excess levels can cause Methemoglobinemia, or “blue-baby” disease.

Arsenic is a natural occurring element, found throughout the United States.  Long term exposure to Arsenic in drinking water can cause cancer in the skin, lungs, bladder and kidneys.  Regions of the United States where Arsenic is found is shown below.

Bacteria and other pathogens

Testing for all forms of bacteria is impractical and expensive.  Therefore, the EPA has developed a test for total coliform bacteria as a standard to determine the bacterial safety of water.  Coliform Bacteria originates in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals and can be found in their wastes.

Not all bacteria are harmful.  However, E. Coli  and fecal coliform bacteria can cause serious health complications to infants, young children , elderly adults and can be fatal.

Legionella is a type of bacteria which causes Legionnaires’ Disease, a form of pneumonia.  In 1976, this condition sickened 221 persons at a Legionnaires Convention in Philadelphia, resulting in 34 deaths.  It is believed the bacteria came from the hotel’s cooling tower without proper disinfection.  If you suspect your water is not safe, water testing is recommended.

Two common cysts which are a water treatment concern are Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium.  Both are water-born microbes which originate in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals and can be found in their wastes.  Health effects can be serious and fatal.

Water transmitted viral pathogens are a major cause of diarrhea, vomiting, fever and more series health effects, including meningitis. Pregnant women are at particular high risk to infection from virus. If you suspect your water is not safe, water testing is recommended.

Concerned your tap water may not be safe?

Selecting a water treatment system is a daunting task.  This is because the system you need depends on what’s in your water.

If you suspect your tap water may not be safe, we suggest you get your water tested by a trained water treatment professional.
